Stocks, IRAs and Charitable Funds

Stock

Donations of stock can be a great way to support Hunger at Home. In addition to providing resources that allow Hunger at Home to deliver leading edge solutions to build food security and self-sufficiency, you may be able to avoid capital gains tax on appreciated stock that you have owned for at least one year.* Contact Michael Miller at michael@hungerathome.org to receive instructions on how to donate stock.

Individual Retirement Account (IRAs)

If you are age 70 ½ or older you may donate a gift from your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) you can give a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly to Hunger at Home. If you don’t receive the income from the distribution, you won’t be taxed on it. Contact your IRA administrator and request them to send the gift or use your IRA checkbook to send the gift to Hunger at Home yourself.

Donor Advised Funds (DAF)

Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) is a tax-deductible financial account similar to a personal foundation. It allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction and then recommend grants from the fund over time. You can easily request a gift to Hunger at Home through your DAF administrator.

The Gift of Time

Volunteers are a vital part of our operation at Hunger at Home. Any time you can spare is greatly appreciated. By clicking on the link below you can create an account for yourself (or sign into your already created account) and register to volunteer at shifts that work with your schedule.

While we have one off type volunteer opportunities come up, our 3 main volunteer opportunities are:

Monday Community Drive Through Distribution at PayPal Park

Every Monday morning, rain or shine, we provide a direct to community grocery distribution in the parking lot of PayPal Park (home of the SJ Earthquakes). We have roughly 150-200 cars that drive through and we load their trunk with ~50 pounds of groceries – enough to feed a family of 4 for a week. Come help load groceries into the cars! The volunteer shift is 8am – 12pm.

Meal Prepping and Warehouse Help

Join us at our warehouse / offices to help with meal prepping in the kitchen, organizing and cleaning in our warehouse, meal packaging and more. Every day is a new adventure of what is needed! This volunteer opportunity is Monday – Friday 8am-11am.

Catering Support for our Social Enterprise Full Circle Catering

Full Circle Catering is a social enterprise of Hunger at Home meaning that all net proceeds go back into Hunger at Home and feeding people. We have catering events where we need help getting food out and served. This volunteer opportunity takes place at various locations and times.

Please click below to sign up and view our current volunteer opportunities. For further information please contact – volunteer@hungerathome.org.

*Please note if you have volunteered with us before, you will notice we are now using a new sign up system called Bloomerang Volunteer. The first time you use Bloomerang Volunteer you will need to create an account and then you can view available volunteer shifts.

Businesses

Financial Support

Every donation makes a difference to hungry and homeless people in our community. We gratefully accept one-time donations, monthly contributions or gifts of stock.

No one should go hungry in our community. Your donation can make that possible.

Other Opportunities

Food Donations

Hunger at Home invites local restaurants, hospitality providers, caterers, and other food vendors to donate their high-quality, large-volume excess food for distribution to homeless shelters and meal centers operated by our nonprofit partners.

From much-needed protein and canned goods to fresh vegetables and bakery products, your excess food will make a difference to thousands of people who are hungry in our community.

We work directly with our business partners and can schedule regular or custom pickups, depending on your business’s needs.

Surplus Donations

Our Got Surplus? program invites local businesses to donate excess or gently used supplies, including housewares, electronics, furniture, linens and hygiene and grooming products.

Through our non-profit network, Hunger at Home will repurpose these items for use in homeless shelters, low-income housing, and other worthy nonprofit projects.

Corporate Sponsorship and Team Building

Help Hunger at Home help others by becoming a corporate sponsor. Through a day-long team building event, your organization will have a hands-on volunteer experience like no other. Your team will collect and distribute food and supplies for those in need in the Bay Area. This unique opportunity enables your employees to step out of the office and grow as a team, while also increasing their personal awareness as they serve the community.

For more information on becoming a food, surplus, or corporate sponsor, contact Director of Development, Lisa Walstrum at lisa@hungerathome.org or (408) 318-0038.
